Soyo24It was only a mere ten-fifteen years ago when you could easily spend a good $400 on a 14″ CRT monitor. It would have cost you $1000 or more for a 17″ that had about as many colors as a small box of Crayons, not to mention it was as deep as it is wide and wasn’t any more flat than one of the moon’s craters. But now days as new innovations come about, and production costs are cut lower and lower, you can get a lot more bang for your buck. Such as a 24″ wide screen LCD computer monitor now below $300 USD with a little digging and searching. Such as the Soyo 24″ LCD, and that’s just it’s normal price, O***** *** is selling them on Black Friday for below $250! (Edited for legal purposes).

If you’re still running CRT, this would be a good time to upgrade. Not only are they better for your eyes, but they consume less power and last a lot longer, meaning much more bang out of that same buck! Not to mention, the holiday season generally brings about much better deals.

I will stick with my old but good 19′ CRT. The LCD got so many flaws. For example my LCD at work displays gray as pink. Thanks! I will wait for OLED then.

Ah… Jossarian, the long lost art of monitor calibration has been forgotten. Or maybe you have an ill monitor that needs to see the doctor.

guys dont buy LCD’s yet….the new line of OLED TV’s are coming out next year, at which point the prices of LCD’s will crash down…of course by then everyone will be wanting OLED TV’s as they are much more energy efficient and thinner (sony’s first OLED TV is said to be 6mm thick)…

I’ll stick with my 24″ Widescreen 1920×1200 CRT monitor, thanks. Sure, it is pretty big, and weighs a ton, but nobody is going to steal it. And it isn’t for a lack of features.

I don’t lose any sleep over those annoying dead or stuck pixels. It just won’t happen. Brightness and color are excellent, if not superior still to most LCDs. (Let’s not forget, CRTs were NOT killed because of image quality, okay guys?)

‘Native resolution’ really isn’t something that I can care about. The monitor fully syncs up to just about any video signal. In an interlaced video mode, it actually interlaces. In a progressive video mode, it is really progressive. At 75hz refresh, it actually refreshes at 75hz. At a 60hz refresh, it actually refreshes at 60hz. It’ll do 640×480 as perfectly as it does 1920×1024. I can sacrifice some refresh rate at the top end in order to go to even higher resolutions, like 2304 x 1440.

Looks like, when it dies, I’ll have a tough choice to make. Do I go to eBay and find a 24″ Sony Widescreen monitor, or do I save a little money and buy a new LCD?

PS: Yeah, the bang for the buck on the new LCD monitors is incredible. But just keep in mind that image quality did NOT kill the CRT TV or the CRT computer monitor.

The monitor is in the catalog at this link: http://bp0.blogger.com/_kRZYHUoe6Qs/RzGA2ocX_fI/AAAAAAAAAHk/Q4JazFAhGn0/s1600-h/om2.JPG

It’s in the second picture, top right. I am very tempted to get me one for Post-Thanksgiving. Have a happy Turkey Day, everybody!

First of all, I don’t know if the OP (Alex) has English as his first language… but I sure hope not! When your article shows up in my RSS feed of Digg (congrats, you’re at 1160 right now) I expect it not to be painful to read. Examples - “no bargain, [it] would have cost you”, “But now days”, “production costs are cut down low”.

Also, just out of curiosity, would anyone actually spend $300 on a Soyo monitor? I’ve never even heard of the brand, and am pretty sure that (unlike Dell, Sony, HP, Toshiba, etc.) there’s no easy-to-find number to call and get someone who knows what they’re talking about (and understands my language).

Obviously people don’t mind too much, since in the last 24 hours I’ve had 3 articles that have hit the front page.

    Wow, a very nice deal.

I remember 15 years ago, buying my 14″ CRT monitor for $400, and later my 17″ CRT for about $600. My, how times are changing!

I have to say, I think I’ll still wait a year or two before finally replacing my old (and last) CRT. Maybe by then, the magic price will be $99. : )

As an old school gamer, I want the best picture. I have a 21″ CRT. It seems to me that the jury is still out on LCD. Mantari makes a good argument. Why suffer dead pixels over power consumption? I am old. I need brightness and color. The flat screen seems to me, er, flat. Light but not bright. In short, I love the goodness that is CRT. I have yet to see an LCD that compares to my old school monitor. Then again, I don’t get out much.

Took me a minute to realize\ who Splat was ;) Pfft, old?

Anywho, CRT will overall give you better picture, especially in this price range. But the fact of the matter is, the benefits outweigh the costs when comparing the two. Even with my $300 22″ Wide, you can’t find a CRT that’s going to give me this much clarity at this much resolution. I have a multitude of windows open, and none of them are cramped and all are visible.

I will say however, if you’re dropping the cash on high quality panels, you’re definetly going to get a much better picture over CRT. But the difference is just not even close to being worth the extra $1k you’ll spend :P
