Google is a very good example of business diversification. They started as a search engine, and are now one of the worlds leading companies in internet tools, from searching to social networking. Google is the internet super giant. But more and more we see Google jumping out of it’s boundaries just a tiny bit. Afterall, this is how they can make their stock jump from zilch to $731 USD per share in such a short time.

A company called Gillbarco Veeder-Root is behind a sort of Smart Pump. On it it features a screen with which you can use to search for businesses, homes, and Google Maps all powered by Google.

“Consumers can now display maps, find local listings, and even print driving directions and money-saving coupons from Gilbarco’s Encore® dispensers with color screens and the Applause™ media system. The live internet connection means all information is in real time. The Gilbarco® Applause™ media system is the first content management system that uses Google’s world-class open content infrastructure to deliver valuable information at the pump.

Consumers can view maps on the pump’s screen and locate their desired destinations. They can also search Google’s local business listings by category (restaurant, hospital, gift shop, etc.) to find the nearest choices. Once a destination is selected, consumers can also print the driving directions at the pump. Easy-to-read instructions are printed on the receipt printer, making it convenient to take them with them in the car.” -Gilbraco’s Press release.

As far as we can tell, the only place you can actually see one is at a convention in Georgia, the National Convenience Stores Show. As to when they’ll start being used however is unknown.
